Welcome to The Highland Feminist;

  • a safe space to reimagine our daily life based on the principles of joy, pleasure and connection (not simply demonstrate how much we can cope with…)
  • a blogspace to help feminists* heal, connect and transform through sharing ideas, opinions and individual and collective experiences of patriarchy and sex/gender inequality;
  • a place to reclaim our rightful space in the world where we are valued as much as our menfolk;

If you are a feminist with a commitment to living a fuller, more diverse, more creative, more equal life, then it is my great hope that you will find comfort among these pages. For too long, patriarchy has been the dominant form of social, political and economic organisation across most of the world and tired of succumbing to its baseless effects, The Highland Feminist is born of frustration, born of the need for more joy and satisfaction in women’s lives, and born of the need to callout outmoded patriarchal BS whenever necessary.

I used to work exceptionally hard at explaining my feminist points of view “nicely” for fear that I may offend someone. These days, I recognise that any speech that seeks to disrupt the status quo will necessarily upset the prevailing norms, not for the sake of it, but because speaking authentically as a woman, in spaces traditionally reserved for men, means that female voices are frequently shouted down, mansplained away, dismissed as overly-emotional, incompetent or inexperienced, silenced in myriad ways and frankly, not made very welcome at all. Fortunately, I’ve given up trying to be a Good Girl and instead I am embracing my Burning Woman instead (See Lucy H Pearce’s work for reference).

The blog posts on this page are a synthesis of my own views based on decades of formal and informal study of feminism, inequality, social inclusion and women’s studies, and 40 years of lived experience as a young girl, a (mostly) lesbian woman and more recently as a mother. If you love what you read and are interested in sharing your own views, becoming active and joining a community of curious and fierce, badass women then hit me up on my socials or fill out the contact form here.

Don’t like what you read? Feel free to stew on it, argue your case, or simply jog on but please, if trolling is your thing, best prepare for silence, wee scone.

Yours aye, in pleasure and freedom.

Lisa x
